Achieving your goals: The power of why.

By: Verizon Careers

Kamran Ziaee, SVP of Global Technology Solutions (GTS) Technology Strategy & Planning, shares three tips to help you pursue your ambitions.

Have you ever taken a moment to step back and ask yourself, “Why?”

For Kamran Ziaee, Verizon GTS SVP of Technology Strategy & Planning, the power of ‘why’ carries tremendous power. This fundamental question helps frame everything we do and establishes our ‘raison d’être’ or reason or purpose for someone or something's existence, as the French say.

As you embark on meaningful change in your career, community and in the world at large, here are three tips from Kamran on how to ask yourself ‘why’ and set yourself up for success while achieving your goals.

1. Give yourself time.

When we consider a goal, we do ourselves a disservice if we don’t spend time really thinking about it. It’s critical to take a moment to consider why it matters, why it’s important, and why it’s a priority. These points are important to list out.

True goals are not overnight achievements and usually involve additional resources. Don’t rush this process — give yourself time to think, rethink, and revisit your ideas once more.

2. Consider your WHY.

It’s important to ask yourself, “Why is this not only a priority for me but also for those around me? Who will be impacted by this decision?” Although your goals should help you work towards a better ‘you,’ they can also have a positive impact on the world around you.

Take a moment to jot down your goals and why they matter to you and those around you. You should also hold yourself accountable for achieving your goals by sharing them with your family, manager, or a trusted friend or colleague.

3. Create measurable goals.

As with any goal or strategy, you’ll want to have the ability to not only track your progress but also to determine why each step is meaningful. It’s a good idea to regularly check your progress and reflect on what you’ve accomplished by completing periodic self-check-ins as you work to reach your goals.

One of the most important qualities of a leader is taking responsibility for your actions, and ensuring you’re on track to meet those actions and expectations. Schedule an hour each month to take note of your progress and determine whether you need to pivot your strategy.

“Stay focused. There is a lot of distraction and noise out there — it’s important to stay tuned into what matters, and to tune out what doesn’t benefit you and your goals.”
